This offering is for a replica of a United States
    Naval Cutlass
    and
    scabbard
    .
The Naval Cutlass is a close cousin to the longer, lighter cavalry saber. It was designed for sea-fighting on crowded ship decks with both friend and foe close at hand so it was designed to be large and heavy enough for controlled slashing and short enough to control in close fighting quarters.
The replica offered here is of the Naval Cutlass introduced in 1860 as a replacement for the “Broad Sword”. Patterned after the French Naval Cutlass, it was used by the U.S. Navy throughout the Civil War and was still in use at the beginning of World War II. A feature that sets the cutlass apart from other military swords is the heavy “basket” hand-guard; again, this was a necessity to protect sailors from injury in close boarding and fighting.
