Flightless Fruit Fly/ Fruitflies Culture (Drosophila hydei), 32oz. These are a larger fruit fly! These are made to order and then sit for a day to ensure egg laying before packaging in case adult flies are DOA. I use all organic food and it is guaranteed not to mold! It grows huge batches of fruit flies that will be sure to last weeks! Due to delays and summer season refunds will not be given outside of a two hour delivery
Made to order, I make my own media which is thicker. will send at least 75 starter flies.
Temperatures above 90 will give some flies the ability to gain flight, these come from south georgia where it is very hot, it is possible when these arrive to you a few may fly out. My cultures leave flightless but it appears the heat this summer has caused some to arrive flying. I recommend opening it for the first time outside or shaking them to the bottom and quickly adding them to where they are being fed. 95% of flies will remain flightless, but some may take off. To keep them from flying in the future, it is recommended to store them under 80 degrees! No refunds will be provided due to them flying as it was mentioned in the description!
It's a protein that enables their wings to start working. The protein isnt formed in the right configuration for wing use due to a defective gene in the flightless flies. However, that protein forms correctly at higher temperatures, allowing them to fly. ***The fliers produced from this circumstance are still genetically flightless, so any offspring they produce with other genetically flightless flies would result in flightless flies if their flight proteins are manufactured in lower temps.*** The wingless fruit flies dont have wings, so that flightless protein mutation doesnt affect them either way. I have completely wingless melanogasters available that have no wings so they will never fly.
Shipping is nonrefundable as I'm not responsible for what USPS does. I package them as a live insect and a fragile upright sticker, that being said usps is sometimes careless. If the media arrives shaken up please give it time to settle! I package them upright and taped to the box and I'm NOT responsible for usps being careless. Leaving them in a hot mailbox all day will result in a dead culture!!! DO NOT throw out cultures if adults are DOA as they will have already laid eggs in the food, just give it some time, I do not guarantee alive arrival of adults as they don't live past a few days and usps sometimes mishandles the packages, but I guarantee the culture will product /larvae flies within a week as long as they weren't exposed to extreme temps for long periods of time. Again, I am not responsible for USPS mishandling the culture. Let the media settle and if adult flies are dead wait for the larvae to turn to flies, it doesn't take long!
Despite delays, I package well and expect them to arrive just fine!
