Noritake Cakeplate & 4 Desssert Plates Hand Painted Star Burst Luster 1918-1936Noritake Cakeplate & 4 Desssert Plates Hand Painted Star Burst Luster 1918-1936
Exquisite Decorative CAKEPLATE & 4 DESSERT PLATES Set,
Hand Painted FLORAL w/VERY Unusual STARBURST LUSTER in the Center of each Plate, Black & Gold Bands on Rims, from Noritake, Japan, circa 1918-1936
DESCRIPTION:
The unique hand painted dessert set was produced with beautiful chrysanthemum blooms & leaves. Each piece has the same very striking, unusual starburst luster in the center of each plate. We have never seen this design on Noritake pieces. The floral design looks so classic, but the starburst luster is truly exceptional. There is a wide, bold gold trim on the rims & narrow black bands next to that gold and black on the verge separating the floral part from the starburst luster on each piece. The embossed handles are trimmed in gold. This makes a beautiful display set or can be used everyday as a functional set
.
CONDITION:
While this set is classified as used, the condition is superb. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches or hairlines. There are no utensil marks & no wear to the gold.
DIMENSIONS:
The square cakeplate is 9" with 10" handle to handle and a height of 1 1/2" at the handles. The round dessert plates have a diameter of 6 1/4" with a height of 3/4".
HISTORY/MARKS:
Morimura Bros. formed the trading and decorating company in 1876 which evolved into Noritake. Noritake Company has a rich history of producing porcelain china all the way from January 1, 1904 when the Nippon Toki Kaisha Ltd - the forerunner to the present Noritake Company - was formed in the village of Noritake, a small suburb near Nagoya, Japan with its huge kaolin clay sources. The first reported U.S. registry for a Noritake backstamp for importing is 1911. The backstamp on this piece is the green M-in-Wreath Mark with Noritake on the top. Under that is "Made in Japan" with "Handpainted" in a curve under the wreath. In Collecting Noritake A to Z Art Deco & More, David Spain shows that Noritake substituted Japan for Nippon in their backstamps starting in 1918. Spain identifies this mark as #27.0 which was used 1918-1936.
